How to travel and work abroad in Asia

Have a question: I and a friend are planning on taking a year out to do the whole travel and work abroad for a bit thing. And who better to ask about it all than the people who are experiance in travel and working abroad.

Were thinking Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Bali, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji - hoping to do a few months in Australia working. We need advise - some things we've though off (albeit some are a bit girlie) and some things we've probably missed out. If anyone is free to give advise sometime we'd really appreciate it!

Exp: Where to go? What to see and do? What to avoid? Are organised tours worth doing? Any suggestions on which tours to use? Accomodation suggestions? What are hostels really like?
Travelling - local transport trains/cabs/internal flights?

Visa's - do you need one for each country? If you don't know your next point of visiting does it cause an issue?

Cheapest flight websites? Luggage - how much do you take with you? Electricals - hair straightners - do they work over there (i've had issues with my GHD they didnt work in Vegas)

Laundry - do hostels have laundry facilities? Internet - hoestels / local? Mobile phones - buy in country (example working in Oz for 6 months is it worth getting a PAYG mobile)

Travel Insurace - any recomendations. Toiletries - is it worth buying these things when you get in country or is it more expensive?

Spending budget - How much should we allow for a daily spend - trips - contingency?

Reply:

When I have a spare hour I will reply... I have a rather boring train journey coming up soon  best advise is just go with it and don't over plan things.

Phones: Get a payg in oz, they're cheap.
Budget: Hostel will cost anywhere between $35-50 dollars a night. The more nights you book in a row the more off you get...

And if this is the case haggle  they can always cut you a deal  in the city's you can probably get a room in a share house for $150 - $200 a week if your willing to sign up for a few months.

Straighteners: We're on same power unlike USA. Just get plug adaptor.

Weather: Remember it's frikking hot here in summer. If you're gonna do cairns/great barrier reef do it in winter (your summer) will still be 20degC + and water will be clear as not wet season. In fact look up whale migrating season and plan to go then.

Jobs: You'll make more money in an office, so with your experience get in touch with agencies in Australia to line you up with temp jobs before you head over. Don't take office clothes. Go shopping in charity shops good ones in the city. Make sure you get your working visa
Bali yes.... Go to gilli islands.

Hostels:

Hostels usually will have laundry. But in other countries maybe no, take a bar of soap to wash your undies in the shower and a piece of string/washing line to hang stuff up. Take a sarong to lie on the beach rather than a towel  saves weight, take a padlock, most hostels have wee lockers, sandwich bags for toiletries...

Sucks when they explode in your luggage, take minimal luggage, buy a smaller backpack/suitcase so you can't overfill it.

If you start in Asia take virtually nothing, you can buy everything for cheap  and great souvenirs are clothes, jewellery, shoes from where you've been. Don't take anything you'd be sad to lose. Like expensive watch, rings etc... they will get stolen. Take a mini laptop/ipad/iPhone, macdonalds worldwide have free wifi and almost every hostel too. Buy a small pacsafe bag. They have inbuilt mesh. You can put all your electrical stuff in them and lock them closed and to something in your room. They have a huge range on their website.

Go on eBay and buy a silk sleeping bag liner. If the bed sheets look dodgy you know you're in your own cocoon. Silk doesn't hold body odour so never smells.

All your visa infomation: Is on the UK government website. Just search it. There will be links give yourself a few months as you may need to send your passport off to the embassy in London to get your visa.
