Left eye twitching superstition in Vietnamese and Chinese

The Chinese and Vietnamese have another theory, based on the Tong Shu, or Chinese Almanac. This olden day belief system not only acknowledges that eye twitches may signify something, but they have further developed theories on what an eye twitch may indicate based on eye and time:

Left Eye Twitching During Specific Times:

11pm – 1am: A noblemen may be on his way to see you.

1am – 3am: Be aware that a worrying event may be about to occur.

3am – 5am: Expect a possible visit from a friend from afar.

5am – 7am: A special guest is on his or her way.

7am – 9am: You may expect a visit from a close friend.

9am – 11am: Get ready to party!

11am – 1pm: Lots of eating and drinking looms ahead.

1pm – 3pm: You’ll be safe and sound for whatever plans lie ahead of you.

3pm – 5pm: Watch out! You may lose money.

5pm – 7pm: Guests are on their way.

7pm -9pm: More guests are on their way.

9pm – 11pm: Another guest is on his or her way.

That doesn’t sound all that bad, right? There seems to be a lot of of partying, eating, visitors, and friends. Just avoid a 1 a.m. twitch and a 3 p.m. twitch, and this left eye twitch theory could be a good one to hope for.

If a man’s right eye twitches, or if a woman’s left eye does so, before undertaking a task, it indicates success. If a woman’s right eyes twitches, it indicates worries

What does a sneeze mean to you? Or an involuntary twitching of your eyebrow? To many, it may be a trivial, everyday occurrence but in the study of omens, it can carry many messages. When I was very young, I remember hearing of many omens and signs from those elderly people... like if your ear is itchy, someone is talking about you, etc? In all cultures, even dreams can be interpreted to mean something important!

I have been collecting many articles over the years on this subject, more out of interest than belief, and I will write a bit on them here. The signs can be auspicious or inauspicious, but for the sake of interest, I will only mention the auspicious ones here!

Twitching of the right side of the neck means happiness and prosperity

Twitching in the left shoulder indicates success

An itchy head indicates favourable luck

An itchy chin is prosperity

An itchy right palm indicates unexpected monetary gain

An itchy right foot indicates a successful overseas trip

Left eye twitching superstition in Vietnamese and Chinese

My left eye has been twitching for the past couple of days. Even though it doesn’t usually affect me it was beginning to get rather irritating. So I decided to look into the reasons why this happens.

Funny enough I realized that many different cultures actually have superstitious beliefs about this occurrence which signifies either good or bad luck, depending on your gender and which eye is twitching.

For instance in India, if the left eye twitches for a woman, it is a sign of good luck.

While on the other hand it means quite the opposite in Nigeria, if the left eye twitches it is bad luck in general.

The Malays believed that a twitching right eye means there’s a chance of visiting someone you haven’t met in a long time. A twitch on the left eye means they will cry.

If you ask me this is all too confusing so I am going with the scientific explanation.

Some say it could be a cause of lack of potassium or caused by stress and insomnia.

According to Eye Health Wealth Web eye twitching can run in families, or it can be caused by the side effects of certain medications, such as those used to treat Parkinson’s disease.

Eye twitching, eyelid tics and spasms are pretty common. Usually only the bottom lid of one eye is involved, but the top eyelid also can twitch. Most eye twitches come and go, although they can last for weeks or even months.

I once received an e-mail from a patient’s wife, who told me her left lower eyelid had been twitching for several weeks, and it was driving her crazy. Could I help?

To find a solution for eye twitching, we needed to determine the underlying cause of this annoying problem. Called myokymia in doctor lingo, these rippling muscle contractions in an eyelid can be triggered by:

Stress
Tiredness
Eye strain
Caffeine
Alcohol
Dry eyes
Nutritional imbalances
Allergies

However, this kind of eye twitching also can be hard to treat. The only option for making the twitching stop may be to figure out the cause and deal with it.Almost all sudden-onset eyelid twitching is benign, meaning the condition is not serious or a sign of a medical problem.

More serious forms of eyelid twitching are caused by neurological conditions such asblepharospasm or hemifacial spasm. These conditions are much less common and should be diagnosed and treated by an eye doctor.

Left eye twitching superstition for female in Indian

Left Eye Twitching Superstition – India: The Indian left eye twitching superstition is the reverse of the Chinese version. So in India a twitching right eye is definitely a good sign while the left eye twitching is considered inauspicious. At times, eye twitching can also be based on the gender as well, so while left eye twitching is considered good for women it might be a bad sign for men.

Eye Twitching Superstition from Indians

In India, the superstition of eye twitching is reverse to the Chinese. Also, the eye twitching superstition in India is based on the eye that twitches, gender and the part of the eye that twitches.

In terms of the eye twitching, a twitch of the right eye is usually a good sign. It could mean that you will receive positive news, make money or be successful in some way. Unfortunately, twitching of the left eye is a bad omen.

Gender also dictates the meaning of twitching. Twitching on a woman's left eye is a good sign whereas it is a bad one for a man.

There are about five superstitions in India that are related to the part of the eye that twitches. Left eye pupil twitching is a sign of good luck, middle eye twitching signals money related gains, left eyelid shows that someone is about to undergo some worrying moments, if the lower part of the left eye twitches then you will be spending some money soon, and if the left eyebrow twitches then a child is about to be born and you will receive some positive news as well.

India-land of many believes and traditions. Lot of them are good and positive ones. We have been following them as part of legacy from old family members. And in the process of following them blind folded, we generally cross the fine line of distinction between believes/traditions and superstition. And hence, after some time, we get driven by superstition.

Today I got pulled up towards thinking about one of the very common belief/superstition being observed in Indian families – Twitching of eye. Twitching of right eye of a girl in considered a bad omen and twitching of left eye of a girl is considered a message of something good going to happen.

And for a boy, the meaning reverses-twitching of right eye is a good omen and twitching of left eye is a bad omen.

I very frequently observe my right eye twitching. And then, me being a girl-consider it a bad omen for me. Also, being an “open eyed” follower of believes and traditions I generally try to Google out the reason for this phenomenon.

As expected, I found few very obvious reasons – long hours of interaction with computer screen, dry eyes, stress etc.

So now when I know the scientific reasons of eye twitching, ideally, I should not worry when my right eye twitches. But this is not the case. Although my conscious mind knows and accepts this reasoning but my unconscious mind which has always been fed with some negative implications of right eye twitching goes in a wait of something negative to happen with me.

Here I would also like to mention a scientifically proven psychological fact that when we think negative, talk negative we attract negative things in our life. And when we think positive, stay positive, talk positive we attract positive things in our life. The right eye twitching has really a quantitative effect in my life. This must be happening to other people as well. As and when my right eye twitches I have a default response set- “Oh God, now what bad is going to happen with me”. And there starts a fight between my heart and my mind. My mind saying that not to worry, it’s just a scientific and biological phenomenon. My heart saying- I know something bad is going to happen. You just wait and watch something bad will surely happen. And this situation continues till my eyes go back to its normal-bright and positive situation J

I hope my mind wins some day, and keeps on winning so that my heart stops arguing. But it is of utmost important for us to understand that we should not pass on these superstitions to our next generation. We should ensure that kids should not even get to know any superstitious implications of any scientific/biological phenomenon. This would be little slow, but effective step to remove the stigma of superstition from Indian society. So, let’s take this step to take India ahead. Jai Hind.

For a body part to move, muscles around that part have to contract and relax. It is not any different for twitching. However, muscles around the eye in this case usually contract without any input from the twitching individual. This condition has three main causes: eyes being dry, conjuvitis and being sensitive to light. In addition to these three causes, a few other causes are as listed below.

Insufficient sleep
Being highly stressed or fatigued
Poor vision
A polluted environment
The cornea or eyelids suffering from inflammation
Consumption of alcoholic and caffeinated drinks in large quantities
Insufficient presence of magnesium or vitamins within the body

Chronic fatigue can result in involuntary twitching of eyes

Stress and tension can sometimes make the brain nerves dysfunctional and its power to coordinate body functions. In such conditions, the body cannot absorb vitamin B which is essential for eye function and therefore twitching may occur.

Deficiency in magnesium can also cause this irritation

Lac of sleep or too much of caffeine consumption

Myths or facts

Superstitiously, many people believe the eye twitching to be a sign of something happening around them or in their lives. Like, if your left eye twitches, it is considered a sign of good luck and something good is bound to happen. Meeting your loved ones, receiving a good news or a call you’ve been waiting for. Whereas, the right eye twitching is considered bad and people try to stop it immediately by washing their eyes or rubbing it.

Different parts of the world believe in this differently. Many cultures strongly believe in them. For instance, chines believe that twitching of lower lid mean someone in bad-mouthing you behind your back.

However, Indians have exactly opposite view on eye twitching. Right eye is good and left eye is bad.

In Africa, shedding of tears follow the twitching of the lower eye lid and an unexpected encounter is on your way if you upper lid twitches.

Hawaii is not behind in this as well. Here, left eye means a stranger coming into one’s family, while continuous twitching of the left eye may mean a complete family separation.

How much ever people believe in them, they want to get rid of it if the condition persists. This is how you can treat eye twitching:

Start with avoiding the conditions responsible for eye twitching – like stress, lack of sleep, continuous reading and so on.

Hot or cold compress can sooth eyes

Mild massaging can calm the eyes and stop the twitching

Washing eyes with cold water

Wear antiglare while working on computers and sunglasses when outdoors to avoid harsh sunlight

Include Magnesium in your diet through almonds, spinach, whole grains and sometimes dark chocolates.

When should you see the doctor?

If the condition continues for more than 3 weeks
Eyes get red or swollen and has a discharge
Eyelid completely closes with each twitch and it is difficult to open it
The doctor will initially five you antihistamine pills or eye drops or if required may treat you with Botox injections to relax the muscles contractions.

How to Relieve Eye Twitching

1. Get Enough Time to Sleep

The recommended time to sleep each day is between seven and eight hours. Any less than this negatively affects your body. One part of the body that suffers from limited sleep hours is the eyes, especially the right eye which can keep twitching as a result.

2. Keep Your Eyes Well-Lubricated

Dry eyes contribute to twitching of the eyes. Luckily, the problem of having dry eyes can be solved by getting prescribed antihistamine drugs and eye drops from your doctor. In addition to relieving eye twitching, it will also eliminate any eye irritation.

3. Soothe Your Eyes

When muscles of your eyes, especially the right eye, get stressed by actions such as being in front of a computer for long, the eyes may experience a spasm, which leads to twitching. Relaxing of the eyes' muscles can be done by cold compression or placing cucumber pieces over the eyelids.

4. Get Your Eyes Appropriate Nutrients

If your body does not have sufficient vitamins D, B12 and magnesium minerals, then you could suffer from twitching. Therefore, consuming foods rich in these minerals will relieve the eye twitching. You should eat green vegetables for magnesium, supplements for vitamin B12 and bask in the morning sun to replenish vitamin D.

5. Don't Strain Your Eyes

In order to reduce the chances of suffering from eye twitching, keep your eyes relaxed without straining it a lot. In order to achieve this relaxation, avoid unfriendly lighting, being in front of a computer screen for long hours, or watching the TV all day.

Vietnam best time of year (review and guide)

Remember, north Vietnam has four seasons while the south basically has only two, wet and dry. Wet season is south is normally from September through December.

Vietnam best time of year (review and guide)
Vietnam best time of year (review and guide)

Anytime is actually good time for Vietnam due to its geographic north and south spread. In the south after January will be more dry, while up north cooler weather will dominate during winter times.

But it depends. In the South, including Saigon, the dry season is from December to April. The rest of the year it’s rainy especially in October when there can be flooding. That said, even in rainy season it may just rain hard for one hour a day and then be okay the rest of the day. The plus also is that after rains humidity goes way down. In the North, December and January can be pretty cold.
